Security officers organizing with the SINTRAVALORES union in Colombia announced a breakthrough agreement in one of the most difficult and dangerous places for workers to organize. The actions of brave security officers in South America and across the globe contributed to a huge victory in Colombia, where officers working for Prosegur have faced death threats and unsafe working conditions.

According to the UNI Global Union, a new agreement between Prosegur and the security officers in the SINTRAVALORES union improves working conditions, and takes concrete steps toward labor peace, after many years of struggle.

Here in the United States, SEIU security officers from across the country stood in solidarity with Prosegur security officers in South America. Officers participated in actions at Spanish consulates in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles, and the ASIS International security industry conference this fall. Security officers and janitors held a powerful rally outside the Spanish consulate in Los Angeles while others delivered information to the consulate.

Fidel Hugo Alfonso, president of SINTRAVALORES, said, "I am highly satisfied, both personally and as a leader. Two months ago we thought this was unattainable, and what UNI did globally was very important.”

What’s next?

Adriana Rosenzvaig, Regional Secretary of UNI Americas said she hopes “this victory opens the door for solving other serious problems we have in the region, like in Paraguay, Chile and Peru."
