Philadelphia's PECO Energy Company, which hires U.S. Security Associates to provide security, claims to be "committed to the wellbeing of the communities we serve."
Last time we checked, security officers were a part of those communities.
How's their wellbeing?
"I am struggling to make ends meet," says Damon Harris, a security officer at U.S. Security Associates. "I only make $8 an hour. The company's health plan cost $100 a month and my rent is $400 a month. After that, there is nothing left over."
That's why Harris and several community supporters were outside the PECO building last week, urging PECO to live up to its own professed values.
Community wellbeing means that individual members of that community--especially workers--have food, healthcare, housing, and opportunities for education and recreation. It means that people can live a healthy and fulfilling life--without the constant stress of knowing you're just a paycheck away from disaster.
It's time for PECO to stand up for the wellbeing of Philadelphia's security officers.
