Dozens of activists will protest outside a shareholder meeting to call on Google to join the fight against income inequality by using responsible contractors that provide their employees with enough hours to make a living and respect workers' rights, including the right to form a union. Google's founders understand that for a company to thrive, the communities in which it operates have to thrive as well, that's the subtext of the motto "Don't be Evil."
Security Industry Specialists (SIS), the security contractor Google currently uses to protect its campuses, does not provide the majority of its officers with enough hours to get by. The majority of SIS officers are considered "flex-time" workers who only work part time and do not qualify for benefits or sick days.
A canvass conducted by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), found that 80 percent of the workers surveyed were only offered part-time work. SIS has also fought workers attempts to form a union -- even going so far as to send spies to worker meetings.
