Contracted Security Officers and Janitors, members of SEIU USWW, in Los Angeles County have been speaking out, rallying and fighting for years to get access to affordable healthcare and they have WON!
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved 100% employer paid healthcare for about 2,000 contracted workers working at LAC+USC, Harbor-UCLA, Olive View-UCLA Medical Center and Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center. The impact of this vote will change the lives of contracted Security Officers like Anthony Thomas.
Anthony Thomas is a member of SEIU USWW and a Security Officer at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Currently, Anthony would need to pay $212 a week to get access to insurance. He cannot afford this, which is why he has been speaking out, rallying and lobbying to make this change happen.
Having to deal with not just the everyday hazards of working in a hospital, but the COVID-19 pandemic, Anthony expressed how exposed they are- “We’ve been exposed to COVID, AIDS, monkeypox — I mean we’ve been exposed to all of these dangerous things, and we risk exposing that to our loved ones at home.”
Now, Security Officers are among the thousands of contracted workers who will be able to have access to affordable healthcare and have one less worry to think about when working in a hospital. These Contracted Security Officers have shown that when you stick together and don’t give up you can win any fight!
